Small-business technology articles often use striking percentages about AI adoption, cloud software, productivity or digital marketing. A number can look authoritative while leaving important questions unanswered. Before using a statistic in a business decision, find the original source and check who produced it, when the research was conducted and what population was measured. If the source cannot be identified, treat the figure as an unsupported claim rather than evidence.
Check what the survey means by small business
Definitions vary. One study may focus on sole traders and microbusinesses, another on employers below a particular size, and another on a mixed group extending into larger organisations. Geography matters as well. Results from one country, sector or customer base may not describe UK small businesses generally. Read the methodology before applying a headline figure to your own company.
Understand what counts as technology adoption
A claim that businesses 'use AI' or 'use cloud software' can cover very different behaviours.
